Bumi - The Master of Earthbending

Bumi’s eccentric personality led many to underestimate him, but he was actually a master strategist. He often planned ahead and used unconventional tactics.

When Kya suggested they track Jinora’s footprints, Bumi remarked that spiritual activity was everywhere in the Spirit World. He also chided her for believing that tracking spirits would work.

What is Bumi’s personality?

Bumi is a confident, enthusiastic, and loyal person. He always has the best interest of his friends and family at heart, but he can also be a bit reckless.

While Kya and Tenzin questioned their ability to enter the Spirit World, Bumi boasted about his previous experience fighting pirates using a feather, two eggs, and a barrel of molasses. When he was criticized by his brother for embellishing, he defended himself by saying that he only told the truth in order to inspire them.

Later, at the Northern Air Temple, Bumi tagged along while Tenzin and Korra meditated to prepare for their journey into the Spirit World. He listened as his older brother told them the history of the Air Nomads, but was bored and entertained by his own thoughts.

What makes Bumi a master of earthbending?

King Bumi is the king of Omashu and a longtime friend of Aang’s. He is an eccentric old man prone to cackling and snorting at jokes, but underneath his wild exterior lies a master of Earthbending. Bumi always thinks ahead and waits for the perfect moment, a strategy that helped him easily take back Omashu from the Fire Nation during the Hundred Year War.

Bumi also possesses powerful techniques Bumi138 unique to him. He can levitate enormous boulders and create fissures in the ground with his feet. He can even bend jennamite, a strange substance that encases the victim.

During the search for Tenzin, Bumi and Kya mocked their brother over his decision to replace Unalaq as Korra’s spiritual mentor. This drew the attention of a dark spirit, but Unalaq was able to use his spiritbending to calm it down.

What is Bumi’s relationship with Aang?

Bumi is a mentor to Aang, teaching him how to think outside the box in order to solve problems. He also helps him develop his patience by challenging him to take more time on tasks. He is exacting yet patient and a great supporter of Aang’s beliefs.

He is the only known earthbender friend of Aang from before the Hundred Year War, though he formed friendships with Katara, Sokka, and Toph after surviving his one hundred years frozen in the Iceberg. He is compassionate, teasing, and good-natured.

Bumi and Kya are Aang’s legacy characters. They represent his support system, love, and family. Bumi is a loving, caring person and a wise mentor, while Kya is compassionate, wise, and aware of herself. They are the perfect example of a loving friendship.

What is Bumi’s profession before he retired?

Bumi served as the second division commander of the United Forces, and was a renowned airbender and military leader. He joined the United Forces to protect the world and make his father proud.

During a firebending showdown in spring 100, Bumi stood atop a city wall and watched the Fire Army unleash flaming projectiles at Omashu’s citizens. When the residents ran out of shields, Bumi slapped their backs and encouraged them to keep fighting.

Later, Bumi and the other airbenders were roused by Tenzin’s blasting of a horn. He urged them to train hard, but when Kya and Opal slipped up on an obstacle course, Bumi scolded them. Later, Bumi stood at a gateway on Air Temple Island that doubled as the finish line for an air scooter race between Korra, Ikki, and Jinora.

What is Bumi’s leadership style?

Bumi is a calm and steady leader, who is willing to take calculated risks when the situation calls for it. During the attack on Omashu, he was on a balcony watching the fire army bombard the city and when Tenzin suggested breaking through the security forces with brute force, Bumi dismissed it as “mad talk” and instead pointed out that they needed to use strategy.

Later, when Zaheer and the Red Lotus rounded up all of the airbenders into a courtyard, Bumi helped organize them, urging everyone to remain calm. He then reminded them that they had trained together on obstacle courses and that they m
